Under the Tuscan Sun follows the story of Frances Mayes, a San Francisco-based literature professor, literary reviewer, and author. She is struggling to write her latest book while dealing with the unexpected news of her husband filing for divorce. Her husband wants to marry the woman he had an affair with and is suing Frances for alimony, despite her financial difficulties.
Frances accepts her best friend Patti's offer of a vacation to Tuscany, originally planned as a gay tour for Patti and her partner Grace. Patti believes Frances needs a break from the divorce and emotional turmoil. While in Tuscany, Frances impulsively buys an aged villa, hoping to start a new life and rediscover romantic love.
Frances faces many challenges in renovating the villa and creating a happy life in her new surroundings. She discusses her emotional goals with real estate agent Signor Martini, who shares a story about laying railroad tracks between Vienna and Venice before the train was built. The question arises whether Frances will be able to lay her own emotional tracks and achieve the life she envisions.
