Synopsis

Down to his last penny, Ted Narracott, a former Second Boer War veteran and now a farmer in Devon, England, outbids his cruel landlord, Mr Lyons, at an auction and buys a thoroughbred colt. As his son, Albert, forms a close bond with Joey, the family's beautiful, graceful, and muscular male horse with the shiny coat, World War I breaks out, and the noble beast changes hands. Now, from the harsh mountainous landscapes of Devon, and the battle-scarred fields of the no man's land near the River Somme, brave Albert embarks on a peril-laden adventure across war-torn northern France, bent on finding his beloved Joey. Will Albert ever reunite with Joey, the fearless warhorse?

The orchestral arrangements are both epic and intimate, reflecting the grandeur of the war scenes as well as the tender moments between Albert and Joey.

Margaret Mitchell
8/10

The use of traditional instruments, such as strings and brass, adds a sense of authenticity to the music, making it feel like a true reflection of the time period in which the story is set. The sound of the music transports the listener to another era and immerses them in the world of War Horse.

Overall, the music in War Horse felt like a missed opportunity to elevate the storytelling and evoke a deeper emotional response from the audience. It lacked the power and resonance needed to truly complement the poignant moments and dramatic events unfolding on screen.

The lack of diversity and depth in the musical compositions made the overall listening experience monotonous and uninspiring. I found myself yearning for more complexity and layers in the soundtrack to better reflect the complexity of the characters' emotions and the intensity of the war-torn setting.
