Synopsis
Dans les années 1920, Jordan "Bick" Benedict (Rock Hudson), à la tête de la riche famille d'éleveurs Benedict au Texas, se rend dans le Maryland pour acheter un étalon, War Winds. Là, il rencontre et courtise la mondaine de 18 ans Leslie Lynnton (Elizabeth Taylor), qui devient sa femme après une romance éclair.
Ils retournent au Texas pour commencer leur vie ensemble sur le ranch familial, Reata, propriété de Luz (Mercedes McCambridge), la sœur aînée et grincheuse de Bick. Leslie ne s'entend pas avec Luz car cette dernière méprise l'origine aisée de Leslie, tandis que Leslie trouve Luz impolie.
Jett Rink (James Dean) est un employé de ranch local qui travaille pour Luz et espère trouver sa fortune en quittant le Texas ; il nourrit également un amour secret pour Leslie malgré le fait qu'elle soit mariée à son patron.
Un jour, lors d'un rassemblement de bétail, Luz exprime son hostilité envers Leslie en creusant cruellement ses éperons tout en montant le cheval bien-aimé de Leslie, War Winds. Luz meurt après avoir été jetée de cheval par War Winds, et dans son testament, Jett se voit attribuer une petite parcelle de terrain au sein du ranch Benedict de 595 000 acres.
Quelques années plus tard, Leslie donne finalement naissance à des jumeaux, Jordan "Jordy" Benedict III et Judy Benedict, ainsi qu'à une fille plus jeune nommée Luz II (Carroll Baker).
Un jour, Jett découvre du pétrole dans une empreinte laissée par Leslie et développe un puits de forage pétrolier sur sa propriété. Bick est agacé par les prospections de Jett et tente de lui refuser l'accès à sa terre.
Pendant les années 1940, les tensions dans la famille Benedict tournent autour de la façon dont les parents veulent élever leurs enfants adultes. Bick insiste obstinément pour que Jordy lui succède et dirige le ranch, mais Jordy veut être médecin. Leslie veut que Judy fréquente une école de finition en Suisse, mais Judy aime le ranch et veut rester au Texas pour ses études.
La rivalité entre les Benedict et les Rink continue cependant, et atteint son paroxysme lorsque les Benedicts découvrent que Luz II et le beaucoup plus âgé Jett Rink sortent ensemble.
Dans la scène finale, de retour au ranch, Bick regarde ses deux petits-enfants jouer dans un berceau avec Leslie et réfléchit à sa vie et à sa famille. Leslie dit à Bick qu'après l'avoir vu perdre le combat dans le diner, elle le respecte enfin et considère la famille Benedict comme un succès.
