O fotógrafo de sucesso da revista L.B. Jefferies - Jeff para seus amigos - está na sétima semana de oito de um gesso em sua perna quebrada sofrida durante uma missão, os problemas sendo não apenas não poder trabalhar, mas estar confinado em seu apartamento em Greenwich Village ao longo do curso, agora durante uma onda de calor, com seus únicos visitantes sendo Stella, a enfermeira fornecida pela seguradora de língua afiada, e a socialite Lisa Fremont, uma repórter de moda e sua namorada. Enquanto ele está ciente de que Lisa vê seu relacionamento como *o* de longo prazo, Jeff está pensando em terminar as coisas com ela ao não vê-la seguindo-o ao redor do mundo em situações muitas vezes desconfortáveis durante a missão.
Com seu apartamento de frente para um pátio cercado por outros prédios de apartamentos, Jeff alivia em grande parte seu tédio espionando seus vizinhos que têm suas janelas abertas devido à onda de calor, muitos cujas histórias, que ele só pode supor pelo que vê, são de natureza de relacionamento pessoal: a mulher solitária que tenta tornar sua vida menos solitária, a dançarina com muitos pretendentes que provavelmente não se importam com ela além de seu apelo sexual, um casal de meia-idade que possui o cachorro do bairro baixado para o jardim do pátio em um sistema de polias, e um homem, aparentemente um vendedor, cuidando de sua companheira acamada, provavelmente sua esposa, todos muitas vezes serenados por um compositor em um piano enquanto trabalha.
Enquanto ambos estão enojados com suas atividades voyeurísticas por razões diferentes, Jeff consegue convencer tanto Stella quanto Lisa de que, baseado apenas em seu comportamento, o vendedor provavelmente assassinou sua esposa por mutilação, aparentemente por outra mulher. Enquanto ele também conta ao seu amigo veterano de guerra, agora Detetive da Polícia Tom Doyle, extraoficialmente, Tom, enquanto o indulgindo até certo ponto, está apenas o divertindo em acreditar que sua imaginação está indo longe demais em seu tédio.
Deixados às próprias custas, Jeff, Lisa e Stella entram em um jogo de gato e rato com o vendedor para descobrir evidências, o vendedor que eles descobrem se chamar Lars Thorwald, esse jogo que pode se tornar mortal se o que eles acreditam for realmente verdade e Thorwald sentir que está sendo encurralado.
