Palermo 1965. A train leaves for Milan with poor Sicilians looking for work, a teacher going to Turin where a publisher is waiting for her, an unhappy-looking nurse, a Lombard industrialist with his thirteen-year-old son and a very young mistress. Ulysses, the driver of the sleeping car, is also there. At a stop in Calabria, a pregnant girl and a modest priest get on. During an unexpected stop, another train passes in the night, bound for the South, on which many of the characters of 1965 are traveling twenty years later. The stories of the passengers intertwine, become animated, are resolved. Some will fall in love, others will not reach their destination and will stop prematurely, some will discover themselves different, new lives will be born. But the vision of everyone's destiny - which appeared behind the windows of the second convoy - soon disappears. Everything, illusions and disappointments, successes and disappointments, has yet to happen.
