The eponymous Monster High is a high school where adolescent monsters from different species and cultural backgrounds interact on a regular basis, and learn to mostly tolerate each other. Early episodes focused on the naive newcomer Frankie Stein, daughter of Frankenstein's Monster, and her efforts to socialize. She apparently had no friends before enrolling, and she has had a shorter lifespan than most of her peers. She soon befriended the vegetarian vampire Draculaura, Dracula's daughter. Draculaura struggled with a fear of blood (unlike any other vampire in the series) and cultural traits which set her apart from other vampire students. She got along with werewolves much better than her own kind, and soon started dating the star athlete Clawd Wolf. Draculaura initially had no access to vampire powers, although she eventually learned how to shape-shift. Draculaura's best friend was Clawd's sister, Clawdeen Wolf. Clawdeen was depicted as a skilled athlete and an aspiring fashion designer. She was witty and perceptive, but frequently struggled with anger issues. Early plots focused on Clawdeen's somewhat possessive behavior towards Draculaura, and her anxiety that she would loose her best friend. A recurring subplot was that Clawdeen had little to no interest in romance, and at times disapproved of her friends' tastes in boys. Clawdeen had an adversarial relationship with her younger sister Howleen Wolf, in part depicted as a struggle for dominance in their pack. All three of the main girls initially had an adversarial relationship with the Egyptian mummy girl Cleo De Nile, an undead Egyptian princess with egotistic tendencies. After they chose to join Cleo's cheerleading squad, they grew to become close friends with Cleo and discovered much softer sides to her personality. Recurring subplots involving Cleo included her loving relationship with her steady boyfriend Deuce Gorgon, her fears that Deuce was cheating on her with other girls, Cleo's sibling rivalry with her older sister Nefera, and her intense adversarial relationship with the scheming werecat Toralei Stripe. Toralei was a former friend who had betrayed Cleo, and was in turn angry and bitter that Cleo had rejected Toralei's offer to renew their alliance. Cleo's best friend and right-hand-woman was the nerdy zombie girl Ghoulia Yelps. Ghoulia was a skilled hacker, inventor, and gamer. She liked finding solutions to Cleo's problems, and felt frustrated when Cleo seemed to have no use for her skills. Frequently hanging out with the main cast, but rarely involved in their efforts, was the female sea monster Lagoona Blue. Lagoona was the captain of the swim team, and had a rather troubled romantic relationship with her teammate Gillington "Gil" Webber. Gil adored her, but his parents hated Lagoona due to the traditional hostility between their two aquatic races. Lagoona was typically sweet-natured, but grew jealous when Gil developed friendships with other girls. She was mistaking his fondness for these girls as a romantic interest. Over several seasons, the series developed a large cast of supporting characters in addition to the main ones.
