Synopsis

Oliver Twist tells the story of a young woman who dies after giving birth to a boy named Oliver Twist. Oliver grows up in a workhouse where he suffers from the indifference of the officials in charge. At the age of nine, Oliver asks for more food and is promptly apprenticed to an undertaker.

After being mistreated, Oliver runs away to London where he meets the Artful Dodger and is taken to Fagin, an old Jew who trains children to be pickpockets. Oliver is caught trying to pickpocket a rich gentleman, but is cleared of the crime and taken in by Mr. Brownlow.

Meanwhile, Fagin is visited by a mysterious man named Monks who has an interest in Oliver. Monks buys a locket containing Oliver's mother's portrait from Bumble and Mrs. Corney. Bill Sykes and Nancy forcibly take Oliver back to Fagin, but Nancy feels guilty and plans to return Oliver to Mr. Brownlow.

However, Fagin informs Sykes of Nancy's plan and in a fit of rage, Sykes murders her. This leads to a series of events where Sykes is shot and accidentally hanged, Fagin and his associates are rounded up, and Monks is arrested. It is revealed that Oliver is Mr. Brownlow's grandson and he is happily reunited with his newfound family.
