Synopsis
Un héros improbable, Elwood P. Dowd. Ce célibataire aux manières douces mais excentrique a, pendant plusieurs années, tenu compagnie avec bonheur à Harvey, un lapin de six pieds de haut que lui seul peut voir. Tout va bien jusqu'à ce que la sœur d'Elwood, Veta, et sa fille adolescente, Myrtle Mae, viennent vivre avec lui et craignent que son comportement étrange ne mine leurs ambitions. Quand Elwood perturbe le premier thé de l'après-midi des dames en présentant la riche tante Ethel Chauvenet à Harvey, Veta voit que quelque chose doit être fait tout de suite. Elle emmène Elwood docile à la maison de repos Chumley, le laissant dans la voiture pendant qu'elle raconte au Dr Sanderson tout sur Elwood et Harvey. Sanderson conclut que Veta est la psychotique et la fait sortir pour être engagée. Pendant ce temps, Elwood est traité avec respect et dignité à la lumière de l'état mental de sa sœur. Lorsque le Dr Chumley, directeur de la maison de repos, revient et entend parler de l'affaire, il tire la conclusion opposée : Elwood hallucine en fait. Après avoir licencié Sanderson pour son diagnostic erroné, le Dr Chumley se lance à la poursuite d'Elwood, oubliant complètement la pauvre Veta, qui doit gérer sa propre évasion de l'enfermement à la maison !
