Beijing, 1902: a young enterprising portrait photographer named Liu Jinglun, fond of new technologies, befriends a new Englishman who has brought a projector, camera and short films by the Lumière brothers to inaugurate the Shadow Magic theatre. Liu's work with Wallace brings her into conflict with the tradition and authority of his father, complicated by his infatuation with Ling, daughter of Lord Tan, star of traditional Beijing opera. Liu sees the movies as an opportunity to become rich and worthy of Ling. When the Shadow Magic couple are invited to show the films to the empress dowager, things are looking good. But is there disaster in the script? And can even movies keep tradition when they bring changes?
