Synopsis

The film is based on the musical recording of the famous opera by Modest Mussorgsky about the tragic events surrounding the ruling of the Russian tsar Boris in the early 17th century.

The recording was actually made two years before the filming with the participation of the Washington Symphony Orchestra (conducted by Mstislav Rostropovich) and several opera stars (the part of Marina is sung by Galina Vishnevskaya).

Zulawski made the film just as we would be watching the theatrical performance. Then we are going through the sets and, finally, we notice the film crew.

The director deliberately filled the picture with a plenty of anachronisms making the implications on the Soviet history and the other dictatorships of the 20th century.

5/10

The deliberate use of anachronisms in the film added a thought-provoking element, drawing parallels between the historical events depicted and the totalitarian regimes of the 20th century. This added depth and complexity to the storyline, making the viewer reflect on the cyclical nature of power and corruption throughout history.

The opera stars, especially Galina Vishnevskaya as Marina, brought a level of emotion and depth to the soundtrack that elevated the whole experience. Their vocal performances added an extra layer of authenticity and intensity to the film, making it a truly unforgettable musical experience.

Watching the film adaptation of Boris Godounov felt like being transported back in time to the early 17th century, immersed in the tragic events surrounding the Russian tsar Boris. The director's choice to mimic a theatrical performance added a unique layer to the experience, making it feel both intimate and grandiose at the same time.

5/10

The musical recording of Boris Godounov was truly spectacular, with the Washington Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Mstislav Rostropovich delivering a powerful and emotive performance. The opera stars, especially Galina Vishnevskaya as Marina, brought a haunting quality to their roles that added depth to the overall production.

The participation of the Washington Symphony Orchestra and opera stars in the recording did not translate well into the film, as the music felt disconnected from the visuals, creating a jarring viewing experience.

I was disappointed by the director's decision to include anachronisms in the film, as it distracted from the historical setting of the story and muddled the message about Soviet history and other dictatorships of the 20th century.

While the film Boris Godounov is based on a musical recording of the famous opera by Modest Mussorgsky, I found the soundtrack to be lacking in emotional depth and failed to capture the essence of the tragic events surrounding the Russian tsar Boris.

I found the musical recording of the famous opera by Modest Mussorgsky to be incredibly powerful and moving. The Washington Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Mstislav Rostropovich, delivered a stellar performance that truly captured the tragic events surrounding the ruling of the Russian tsar Boris in the early 17th century.
